Marc Jacobs Lola and Lolita Lempicka Si Lolita are two perfumes featured in the fragrance line-up this fall. Despite their similar names, do they share any other similarities? Both Marc Jacobs and Lolita Lempicka say that their newest perfumes are geared towards audiences that are older than the fan base of Daisy and the original Lolita Lempicka. So could it be that these two matured Lolas will smell the same?
Marc Jacobs Lola
The Marc Jacobs Lola campaign is a throwback to the 1980s just as the Marc Jacobs Daisy campaign was a throwback to a retro era. Just take a look at the bottle and you'll see that Lola samples directly from the glorious days when vinyl was in, gaudy top-heavy fashions were all the rage, and the combinations of golds and brights kept on coming. Marc Jacobs Lola is a fashion-Frankenstein brought back from the dead. Those colors, that aesthetic, that style--the 80s are back, with modern and fashionable twist. And since many 80s trends are currently being resurrected and revamped, there's no doubt that Lola's look will fit right in. But what about its smell?
Marc Jacobs Lola is filled with pink peppercorn, D'Anjou pear, red grapefruit, peony, rose, geranium, vanilla, tonka bean and creamy musk. Press releases describe the main note of Lola as peony. While Marc Jacobs' first perfume, Daisy, was simple, effortless and light, Lola sounds creamy, sweet, and warm. The trendy mix of fruity florals and pink peppercorn is already a sugar extravaganza in itself. And the addition of vanilla, creamy musk and tonka bean only creates a darker, deeper, layer of sweetness. With warm, syrupy components flowing throughout the notes list, Lola sounds like a ringer for a popular youthful winter perfume.
Lolita Lempicka Si Lolita
Lolita Lempicka Si Lolita, on the other hand, sits as far away as possible from the Frankenstein laboratory that fuses the 1980s with the electronics age. The Lolita Lempicka line, instead, maintains its whimsical damsel image intact. The visuals for the original Lolita Lempicka fragrance featured a young woman wreathed in ivy, fairy dust, and other magical things like luminescent fruits and flowers. She lies lounges in a forest that's filled with enchanted chiaroscuro lighting. This time around, the setting is Paris. Si Lolita unveils rows of charming storybook pied-a-terres covered in European evening glow. A loft with quirky slanting sunroofs and bare studio spaces houses a girl who lounges in all her glory among tufts of floral-print linens. The image is fantastically bohemian and unforgivingly girly—something along the lines of Amelie, minus the desperately sad moments. The scent can only smell as darling, adorable, and sweet.
Lolita Lempicka Si Lolita centers around a clover note, which is simple, floral and spicy. The notes of Si Lolita are mandarin, bergamot, pink peppercorn, sweet pea, elemi, amber, patchouli and tonka bean. Off the bat, Si Lolita sounds like it will be another warm floral perfume that will be perfect for winter. But instead of the cloying, youthfully optimistic sugar rush that Lola offers, Si Lolita sounds more nuanced. Tones of spiced balsam will softly temper the faint, delicate floral notes. Also notes of smoky patchouli and creamy tonka beans will add new dimension to this soft, dusky perfume.
Both perfumes purport to offer more mature versions of girly sensuality. Both perfumes are warm florals. But it seems they will animate that sensual warmth in different ways—one with alternating warm and piquant notes (Si Lolita) and the other with sweet, deep, delicious notes (Lola). Once both these perfumes are launched in the US, we'll be able to see just how different Lola and Si Lolita actually are!
